This page tries to keep track of all contra dances, traditional square dances (but not Modern Western Square Dances), traditional waltz sessions and Scandinavian dances in Virginia including dance camps and weekends along with other events in Virginia which include contra dancing and these other forms. Because most of the information is gathered from web sites and the listings are not updated as frequently as the web sites, dancers should visit the web sites for up-to-date information. Abingdon - Dare to Be Square: Dare to Be Square, a day of square dance-related workshops and an evening dinner and community square dance will be held at the Southwest Virginia 4-H Educational Center from 10:00 am to 10:00 pm. Registration begins at 9:30 am. This event will focus on all aspects of traditional square dancing including dance calling, musical accompaniment, and organizing dances, and will highlight the social aspects of dancing. The event will explore regional traditional dance styles including Appalachian circle dances, square dances, and solo flat-floot dancing. Afton - Squares: Firefighters' Appreciation Benefit Dance, Fire Hall, 11100 Rockfish Valley Highway, Afton, VA 22920 (on Route 151 diagonally across from the BP gas station).
